Dalhousie Doctrine of Lapse (1848-56)

  • Lord Dalhousie came to India in 1848 as Governor- General From the beginning he was intent on  possible area.
  • Lord Dalhousie resorted to the Doctrine of Lapse for his take over policy according to which if the ruler o a protected state dies without a natural heir, then his kingdom will not be handed over to his adopted heir and if the adoption is not already permitted by the British authorities, then that State will be merged with the British state.
  • Many states including Satara in 1848 AD and Nagpur and Jhansi were acquired in the year 1854 AD.
